Greetings! Today I’m sharing another card that uses the Twirling Tulips Embossing Folder from Spellbinders and Simon Hurley. And this time, I went dark. And shiny. I do plan on eventually trying to create black tulips still, but that’s for another day.

I began with a piece of black Shizen Rough Watercolor paper. I spritzed it with water, then ran it through my die cut machine with the embossing folder twice. This is really thick paper, so I found that in some areas, I needed to use my old ballpoint embossing stylus to help push the detail out.
Next I grabbed my Finetec metallic watercolors and began to paint. I kept things pretty simple, with not a whole lot of color blending. I figured that since the embossing folder has so many high and low areas, shadows and highlights would form naturally. Watching the watercolors flow over the flowers and foliage is so relaxing, especially when you see the shimmer from the paints moving. I die cut both pieces of the sentiment (which is from Simon Hurley and Spellbinders’ Handwritten Sentiments die set) from the same black watercolor paper. I watercolored the actual word with green, and left the shadow layer black. I used the Edge Distressing tool from Uniquely Creative to rough up the edges of the panel, and I popped it up with Black Foam Tape from Therm O Web. I also painted the outer perimeter of the card base with Grape Jelly Fireworks! Spray, which matched the purple tulips nicely. I didn’t use the Finetec color because my card base is white, and these watercolors don’t work as well on white paper as they do on black.
I love the look of these tulips against the black background. The shine is pretty incredible too. I’m really enjoying this embossing folder, and I hope to have more projects to share with it soon. For now, please visit Spellbinders to see what the rest of the March release has to offer. Thanks so much for sopping by. Have an inspiring day!
Thank you so much for your kind words!
